Skills that students in Kindergarten will be working on during the school year are: *Story Elements - main character, other characters, setting, predict, solution, cause and effect, story sequence, main idea, main idea *Reading Genres - fiction, non-fiction, picture books, fairy tale, folk tale, fable, legend, popular fiction, expository text, poems, songs, and plays, and social interaction/miscellaneous print *Reading Strategies - rhyming, blending, word families, onset/rimes, chunking, letter names, letter sounds, consonants, vowels, concepts of print, and comprehension strategies Writing *Writing Genres - journals, picture stories, stories, shared writing, cards, morning message, personal notes * Writing - think/draw/write, graphic organizers, word wall, inventive spelling, class labels, describing words, comfort words, number words, opposites, simple sentences, colorful drawings, directionality, letter formation, spacing, capitals, punctuation *Handwriting Without Tears - children review basic readiness and social skills and engage in play-based learning as they move to formal handwriting instruction. The curriculum follows a student’s natural sequence of learning: imitation, copying, independent writing. It also follows natural developmental progression from the easiest to the more advanced skills. The curriculum reinforces children’s mastery of concepts throughout the workbooks with special review and mastery activities. These sections follow a group of letters and focus on reinforcing the formation of all previously taught letters. Math *Number Sense - one to one correspondence, counting items in a collection, rote counting to 100, ordinal #’s to 10, recognizing numbers to 20, writing numbers to 10, addition and subtraction readiness, counting on, counting backwards from 10-0 *Algebra - patterning and being able to recognize, describe, extend, and create a pattern *Statistics - sorting by color, shape, size, describing the attributes of objects, graphing using physical objects, pictographs, identify more, less, and the same amounts from pictographs, collect, organize and analyze data *Measurement - recognize morning, noon, afternoon, and evening, months of the year, days of the week, compare lengths of objects, attributes of length *Geometry - identify two and three dimensional geometric shapes, describe shapes, create shapes, sort and match shapes, introduction to symmetry of shapes Social Studies *Basic Needs and Wants - What is the difference between basic needs and wants? *Citizenship - national symbols and historical figures, national holidays, respect responsibility, and rules and their purpose *My Community - school, community figures, neighborhood, geography of the community, etc. *My Family and Other Families - immediate family, extended family, similarities and differences between families *Myself and Others - uniqueness, similarities, and changes Science *Weather - rain, snow, sun, cloudy, hail, autumn, winter, summer, spring *Exploring Matter and Energy - properties, weight, shape, sink and float heavy, light, temperature, lightening *Human Body - being healthy, food, exercise, teeth care, hygiene, rest, parts of the body, growing and changing, characteristics of people, senses *Caring for the Earth - natural resources, air, forests, oil, soil, water, conserve, electricity, energy, gas, recycle, harmful, helpful *Plants and Animals - stem, root, seed, leaves, soil, water, air, light, feathers fur scales, wings, tail, shell, babies, fins
