Vision of Literacy Professional Learning Community (PLC):  The Union Springs educational community believes collaborative and cooperative literacy-based experiences will empower students to find meaning in an ever-changing world.

During the 2006-07 school year, the Union Springs Central School District completed a K-6 Literacy Self-Study.  It was such a success that a 7-12 Literacy Self-Study was completed during the 2007-08 school year.  To maintain the positive energy that was being focused towards literacy... the district launched the Literacy Professional Learning Community.  A "PLC", as defined by Richard Dufour (a recognized national expert in PLCs), is "To create a professional learning community, focus on learning rather than on teaching, work collaboratively, and hold yourself accountable for results."

This year, the Union Springs Literacy PLC was facilitated by Leela George (from Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES) and Karen Burcroff (Union Springs Curriculum Coordinator).  Other members of the PLC include teachers, parents, students, administrators and our Board President. The Committee chose to divide themselves into four sub-committees to maximize our reach:  Technology, Early Literacy, Motivation, and K-12 Connections.

The March 20th Superintendent's Conference Day was dedicated to the Literacy PLC's efforts to help spread information and increase the literacy rate in the greater Union Springs Central School District area. All district employees (instructional staff, transportation, buildings and grounds, secretaries, and cafeteria workers) participated in the morning sessions together... talking and learning about ways our community can promote literacy.  The morning sessions involved workshops about the many components of fluency, making wiki contributions on a Moodle page, and making promises to make a difference in the lives of our students.  [Based on national effort of America's Promise: Caring Adults (one of five promises).]
